Son of Nebat, an Ephraimite of Zeredah; servant of Solomon who fled to Egypt after Ahijah's prophecy. Became first king of the northern ten tribes 931–910 BC. Set up golden calves at Bethel and Dan; created a non-Levitical priesthood. The recurring epithet 'who made Israel to sin'.
