Son of Jonah/John; fisherman of Bethsaida and Capernaum. Brother of Andrew. Renamed Cephas/Peter (rock) by Jesus. Confessed Jesus as Christ at Caesarea Philippi; denied him three times before the cock crowed; restored after the resurrection. Pentecost preacher, leader of the Jerusalem church, opener of the gospel to Gentiles (Cornelius). Author of 1 and 2 Peter. Tradition: martyred under Nero in Rome.
