About
Semitic peoples of the upper Euphrates and Syria descended from Aram son of Shem. The kingdoms of Aram-Damascus, Aram-Zobah, and others were Israel's most frequent foreign neighbors and adversaries. Aramaic, their language, became the lingua franca of the ancient Near East and the language of much of Daniel and Ezra.
