Description
Seleucid commander who led repeated campaigns against the Maccabean revolt, especially in Gilead and Ammonite territory; defeated by Judas Maccabeus at Jazer, in Gilead, and finally killed at the storming of Gazara, where he had taken refuge (1 Maccabees 5:6-8, 34-44; 2 Maccabees 8:30-32; 9:3; 10:24-37; 12:2-25).
