Description
Pharisee of the tribe of Benjamin from Tarsus in Cilicia; Roman citizen by birth. Persecuted the early church; held the cloaks at Stephen's stoning. Encountered the risen Jesus on the Damascus road. Apostle to the Gentiles; three missionary journeys; planted churches across Asia Minor and Greece. Author of thirteen New Testament epistles. Tradition: martyred under Nero in Rome ca. AD 67.
