Description
One of two officers Judas Maccabeus left in command in Judea while he and Jonathan campaigned in Gilead; he and Azariah disobeyed orders, attacked Jamnia under Gorgias, and were defeated with about two thousand Israelites slain (1 Maccabees 5:18-19, 55-62).
