Description
Surviving son of Saul; made king over Israel (north) at Mahanaim by Abner for two years while David ruled Judah from Hebron. Murdered in his bed by Rechab and Baanah.

Originally Eshbaal ('Baal exists') in 1 Chronicles 8:33; renamed Ish-bosheth ('man of shame') in 2 Samuel to avoid the Baal element. Likely identical with the Ishvi of 1 Sam 14:49.
