Description

Father of Joseph per Luke 3:23. Tradition (and most modern conservative interpretation) takes Heli as the father of Mary, with Joseph called his son by marriage; Matthew gives Joseph's biological father as Jacob (Matt 1:16).

Notes

The simplest reconciliation of Matt 1:16 ('Jacob begat Joseph') and Luke 3:23 ('Joseph, son of Heli') is that Luke gives Mary's line, calling Joseph 'son of Heli' as son-in-law. Other harmonizations include levirate marriage. Both lineages traces to David through different sons (Solomon vs Nathan).
