The Tishbite of Gilead; chief opponent of Ahab and Jezebel's Baal cult. Stopped the rain three and a half years; called fire from heaven on Mount Carmel; raised the widow's son. Did not see death — taken up in a whirlwind by horses of fire. Foretold to return before the day of Yahweh; appeared with Moses at the transfiguration. Identified by Jesus with John the Baptist.
